Thank you to Nicole Krout for sending on this great article!
Want to raise a child with grit, resiliency and great leadership ability. Here is an article we loved in Forbes based on work by Dr. Tim Elmore, Founder and President of Growing Leaders, an organization “dedicated to mentoring today’s young people to be tomorrow’s leaders.
It presents a list of seven parent behaviors that can hamper our kid’s own leadership abilities. (The good news, maybe we just need to let them struggle and take risks – and help them see us do the same?)
Here’s the list:
1. Not letting your child experience risk
2. Rescuing too quickly
3. Raving too easily
4. Letting guilt get in the way
5. Not sharing our own past mistakes
6. Mistaking intelligence, giftedness and influence for maturity
7. Not practicing what we preach
You can read the fabulous Forbes article here or a slightly more cheeky version on Life Hacker here (we love that site!)
Another book we love on the risk taking and not rescuing theme: Blessings of a Skinned Knee about using Jewish teachings to raise resilient children.
Here’s to helping our children learn resilience and grit by trying, exploring, failing – and remembering that we had to do the same thing!
