Richard (Rick) McLean, Mack Grandfather & U.S Army Veteran

When, Where, How Did You Serve?

U.S. Army: Flew helicopters in South Viet Nam: May 1967 – 1970.

Do you have any meaningful/impactful moments or stories you would like to share?

Flying, I was a helicopter pilot, 30 mins to a fire base in the mountains with a load of hot Roast Turkey, mashed potatoes, fruit cocktail, ice tea, and apple pie. The troops had been eating C-Rations for a week before we arrived. Making life a bit easier for those in need. I got that warm, fuzzy feeling being able to be of help.

What would you like generations behind you to know about serving?

Heed the call to serve your country if the opportunity presents. Proud to have served in the U.S. Army.

What’s something you learned about yourself during the time you served or after?

Military service for our country allowed me to grow up, and helped to guide me in making choices that were good for me and others. I grew up really fast seeing the world from a different perspective. I was no longer “ college boy,” this was the next step in my life.

What is the significance of Veterans Day for you?

For those who fought for it, life has a flavor the protected shall never know. Recognize those who stepped up and serve our nation, and being a protective part of our nation.
