Second grade continues their unit on the human body and moves on to the circulatory system. They learn what blood is made of and each got to make a sample of their own blood in roughly exact volumes. The plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets were represented with water, red-dyed Cheerios, mini marshmallows, and lentils.

Students put their liquid measuring skills to the test by measuring how much blood is in the average baby, child, adult, and pregnant woman. To help them understand how heart valves work, students made working replicas of heart valves. They also collaborated on building boxes representing different parts of the circulatory system and created a stop motion video that showed a journey through the respiratory and circulatory systems!
