Fourth graders learned about and tested slingshot physics. Slingshots use stored elastic energy to catapult a projectile at high speed. Scientists tested their own slingshots made from stretchy bands secured to chair legs. They tested marshmallows and superballs to observe and record the distance each projectile launched. They noticed there were different variables to a successful launch with maximum distance: having a sturdy base, the tension of the cord, the weight of the projectile, and the angle of the launch. What’s the best part of this lesson? Eating the marshmallow projectiles of course!
